The Long Runway Money, explained from zero

The desk

About The Long Runway

A small editorial desk writing plain English explainers about personal money, for readers who have never invested anything and are tired of being told the subject is obvious.

Two printed drafts of the same article lying side by side on a desk, one marked up in pencil

This site exists because of a gap that anyone starting from zero runs into within about ten minutes. On one side there is material written to sell something, where every explanation bends towards a product. On the other there is material written for people who already know the vocabulary, which begins three steps past where a beginner is standing. Very little sits in between, patiently, without an angle.

So the whole site is one long attempt to sit in between. We publish a small number of pages, we rewrite them rather than replacing them, and we stop the sentence before it turns into a recommendation.

Three rules decide what gets published

These are not aspirations pinned to a wall. They are the actual filter a draft has to pass, and each of them kills things regularly.

  1. Show the arithmetic. If a page quotes a number, the assumptions behind it are printed next to it, in a form a reader can reproduce. A compounding figure without a stated rate and a stated number of years is decoration. Every table on this site says what rate it assumes and rounds honestly.
  2. Name the uncertainty out loud. The interesting part of money is rarely the calculation, it is the range of things the calculation cannot see. Any page that quotes a growth rate also says, in the same breath, that no such steady rate exists in the real world.
  3. Define every word where it is used. A guide does not go up until each technical term inside it is explained in place or carried by the glossary. If a sentence here loses you, that is a fault in the sentence rather than in you.

What this desk deliberately does not do

What this desk deliberately does not do : About The Long Runway: How These Money Pages Are Written

The absences are the point, so they are listed rather than implied.

Why the figures are in dollars Mixing currencies inside an explanation makes tables harder to read for everyone and easier for nobody. Dollars are used throughout as a neutral unit. The arithmetic behaves identically in any currency, and none of it depends on where you live.

How a page gets made

A guide starts as a question somebody actually asked, not as a keyword. The first draft is written without any numbers at all, to check that the explanation stands up in plain language. Numbers go in afterwards, calculated rather than remembered, and each one gets a stated assumption and a rounding rule.

Then the draft gets read back with one question in mind: which sentence here would a beginner have to already know something to understand. Those sentences either get rewritten or get a definition attached. It is a slow way to publish, which is why the shelf is short and stays short.

Corrections and dates

Corrections and dates : About The Long Runway: How These Money Pages Are Written

Every page carries an updated date in its byline, and that date changes when the words change, not on a schedule. When a figure is corrected, the corrected figure is simply the one that appears, and the arithmetic printed alongside it lets you check the new one rather than trust it.

We do not run a newsletter, a comment section, a contact form or an account system, which means there is nothing here that collects information about you. The privacy page sets out exactly what that means in practice, including what a web server unavoidably records.

Who writes it

The Long Runway is written and maintained as an editorial desk rather than under a personal byline. Nothing published here rests on the authority of a name; it rests on arithmetic printed next to the claim, which you can check without knowing anything about who typed it. Where a page cannot support a claim that way, the claim does not go in.

That is also why there are no credentials on this page. We are not licensed to advise anyone, we do not hold ourselves out as doing so, and the material here is general education. If a decision would genuinely hurt to get wrong, the right move is to talk it through with a licensed professional where you live, who can see the whole of your situation rather than the general shape of it.

Everything on this site is general education. It does not take your income, your debts, your household or your country into account, and it is not a recommendation to buy or sell anything.
